Gail Higginbotham, a Maryland native, studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and at Anne Arundel Community College. She is an accredited member of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters and Oil Pastel Society. Additional memberships include the Maryland Federation of Art, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, and Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters.

At an early age, I found joy in drawing with pencils and crayons. At this stage of life, I am proficient in oils and colored pencil; however, oil pastels are my favorite medium for capturing light, shadow and texture. Oil pastels travel well to paint on site and just plain fun to use.

My travels with fellow artists to Maine’s rocky coast and Vermont’s woods and quaint towns inspired paintings “en plein air.” In the studio, I often paint landscapes from my digital photos and outside when possible as the light is so wonderful. I enjoy painting still life studies in the studio using my antique collections as props.

Artists that inspire me include contemporary oil and pastel artist Wolf Kahn, and the still life studies of Manet and Cezanne.

I am available for commission paintings of portraits, boats and pets.
